FTN/Doran Racing Team Is Looking
Forward
To Saturday's Sahlen's Six Hours of the
Glen
LEBANON,
Ohio, May 31 - Doran Racing's engineers
and mechanics have been
working especially hard to prepare their
Kodak EasyShare/Amp'd Mobile/SIRIUS DORAN
JE4 Ford No. 77 for Saturday's Sahlen's
Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen
International in Watkins Glen, N.Y. Their
drivers, Terry Borcheller of Vero
Beach, Fla. and Harrison Brix of San Jose,
Calif., will do their best to make
all that hard work pay off with a great
finish in the race, which will be
broadcast live on SPEED starting at 2:30
p.m. Eastern time Saturday.
It's
all part of a big weekend at the Glen as
the endurance sports car racers
share the card with the drivers who competed
in last Sunday's Indy 500.
Doran
Racing has a superb record of success at
the Glen. Since 1994 the
Lebanon, Ohio-based team has 11 top-five
finishes at the historic upstate New York
road course, including eight podiums and
five outright victories. That doesn't
even count all the Al Holbert victories
at the Glen before then. Didier
Theys and Jan Magnussen put the team's DORAN
Lexus in victory lane at the Glen in
2004, while Borcheller and Forest Barber
were victorious in the Bell
Motorsports DORAN Chevy at the Glen in 2003.
Borcheller's
record at the Glen is also stellar. In addition
to being a
Daytona Prototype winner here, the 2003
DP champion has two SRP II victories in
a
Lola Nissan and one in GTO with a Saleen
Mustang. That doesn't count other
triumphs in Grand-Am Cup.
The
list of Doran Racing's pole positions here
is also impressive, with the
last one of those coming just last August
with Fabrizio Gollin's new track
record on the short course of 1:08.409 (128.930
mph).
Saturday's
Rolex Series race, the only six-hour event
on the schedule this
year, will be conducted on the Glen's 3.37-mile,
11-turn long course. Originally
Feeds the Need Racing's Forest Barber of
Fort Worth was going to do a stint
in the Kodak car at this race, which is
close to Kodak's headquarters in
Rochester, but he has since decided to let
Borcheller and Brix handle all the
driving duties here.
Practice
starts Thursday at 3 p.m. and continues
into the evening. More
practice is slated for Friday afternoon,
with qualifying for the 26 Daytona
Prototypes entered in the 49-car field at
4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon. A morning
practice is on the schedule at 8:15 a.m.
Saturday followed by a driver autograph
session at 11 a.m. and the start of the
six-hour enduro at 2:30 p.m. that
afternoon.
The
most up-to-date weather forecast available
at press time shows a 60
percent chance of a thunderstorm on Friday
and a 30 percent chance of a few showers
on Saturday, with highs both days around
the low 70s and lows in the low
50s. Rain has played a role in past races
at the Glen, so smart team owners
like Kevin Doran will keep an eye on the
skies as well as on the racetrack.
Although
this year is Brix's first full season of
Rolex Series competition,
this won't be his first Six Hours of the
Glen.
"It's
a fantastic track, and I'm really looking
forward to this weekend
because long races seem to suit our team
the best," he pointed out. "Kevin
knows
how to run hard for long periods of time;
that's why he's always done so well
at the Rolex 24.
"Terry
and I really like driving at the Glen because
it's a real racers'
track," Brix added. "In particular,
I really like the esses."
